Recipe of the Month: Fire Cider

Use Fire Cider as a preventative and also to diminish cold or flu symptoms. It takes 3-6 weeks to cure once assembled so plan ahead. Once it's finished, take a daily dose to prevent illness or 1-2 tablespoons at the onset of symptoms, every 4-6 hours.

Fire Cider

Base Ingredients:

  • 1/2 - 1 tablespoons diced or chopped hot peppers

  • 1/2 cup grated onion

  • 1/4 cup grated horseradish

  • 1/4 cup garlic, minced

  • 1/2 cup raw apple cider vinegar

  • 1/4 cup raw honey

Additional Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice

  • 1/2 cup grated ginger

  • 1/2 cup grated turmeric

  • 1/4 cup fresh rosemary, parsley, & thyme

  • Optional: 1-2 teaspoon each cinnamon & black peppercorns

Directions:

  1. Place the ingredients in a quart mason jar except vinegar and honey.

  2. Cover the ingredients with vinegar by an inch or more & shake well. Vinegar will corrode metal lids so use a plastic lid or place lid inside a piece of parchment paper.

  3. Store at room temperature for 3 to 6 weeks, shaking daily. For a more mellow cider bring it to the refrigerator to slow down fermentation, or for a spicier mixture let it sit longer.

  4. Strain into a glass jar. Add honey to taste. Store for several months at room temperature if burped, or up to one year in the fridge.

  5. Dosage: 1-2 tablespoons at the first sign of cold & flu symptoms and every 4 hours until symptoms subside. Fire cider also stands as a preventative during cold & flu season.
