This month, one of our two talented chiropractors has stepped into the Practitioner Spotlight: Dr. Janna Ramji. We sat down with Jenna to find out more about her and her work at PHS. Jenna is also one of four PHS practitioners named in Portland Monthly's Top Doc's 2017 list!
How long have you been with Portland Healing Space and what brought you here? I have been part of the PHS team for just over a year. I saw an ad from PHS somewhere online looking for a Chiropractor to cover maternity leave for Dr. Liz Giles. I immediately thought PHS was a good fit. A week later I was working at PHS and still am today.
Why did you become a Doctor of Chiropractic? I always wanted to be in the medical field but I didn't want to be a medical doctor. After graduating from University of British Columbia, I worked for Dr. Rubina Kurji, a talented Chiropractor in Vancouver. Within a few months of working for her, I applied to Chiropractic school and moved to Portland 2 years later.
When most of us think about chiropractors we think about getting our backs or neck cracked to improve posture. Can you tell us what other things chiropractic care does for the body? Chiropractic care can treat a multitude of conditions such as headaches, TMD, problems with sleep, scoliosis, stress, carpal tunnel syndrome, etc. It can also help decrease discomfort during pregnancy and help turn a breech baby. Chiropractor care is extremely beneficial for people who suffer from musculoskeletal conditions such as overuse/repetitive stress injuries, trauma to muscles, postural imbalances, dislocations, etc.
Is Chiropractic care an effective treatment to balance the body and mind? YES!! There is a HUGE connection between the body and the mind. Day-to-day life can have a significant impact on our overall sense of well being. Chiropractic treatment is a safe and holistic approach to help achieve a balance between the body and the mind. We all know how powerful the human touch can be! Chiropractic care can help ease stress and anxiety caused by our lives by having a direct impact on our nervous system.
Is it correct that Chiropractic care can improve your immune system? Most definitely. There are many studies out there that show how spinal manipulation has a direct impact on the immune system. Chiropractic adjustments have shown to decrease inflammatory response and increase the production of immunoglobulins (the good guys)!
How can Chiropractic care help with sleep? Sleep has major impact on your health and overall quality of life. Sleep is instrumental in maintaining a healthy immune system. Sleep issues are rarely independent occurrences, they are usually traceable to various physical, mental, or chemical stresses. Many of these issues can be treated through Chiropractic care. Adjustments in the neck area have a direct impact on the sleep center of the brain. Chiropractic adjustments restore the proper nerve supply to your muscles which reduces muscle tension and spasms.
Now that you're a Portlander, what are your favorite places to go? I started Trail running this past summer, so Forest Park has become one of my new favorite places. Blazer games at the Moda Center! Go BLAZERS!! When it comes to food though, there are soooo many places I could tell you about. A few of my favorites are: Mediterranean Exploration Company, Ox, San Sai, Ciao Veto, and Dick's Kitchen. If you're into BINGO, Renner's Bar in Multnomah Village, is A LOT of fun!
Do you have any favorite local products that you buy? Townshend's Kombucha is something get a few times a week. Their Clear Mind kombucha is my favorite! I also love wines from the Penner Ash Wine Cellars and Bergstrom Wines.
